Ephesians 2:19 KJV
[19] Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
I woke early, feeling ready but nervous about my trip to Honduras with my dad and our interpreter. Yes, I went last year, so I kind of knew what was to be expected. However this year I would go without my husband who speaks fluent Spanish. That was a little scary! Of course I’ve been practicing my Spanish, but for this old lady, it seems difficult to learn, and Duolingo is just …..well, not enough. God was just going to have to help me. I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to spend time working for the Lord, encouraging others, serving together with my father, the one who planted in my heart a love for the missions.
As I plopped down on the airplane seat and opened up my Bible app for a comforting word, I read the scripture of the day noted above. Wow! How good God is. I will not be a stranger of a foreigner among Gods people. I was so comforted with the thought that even though our tongues may not flow with understanding our hearts will commune as one. Because we are one in the spirit. And that’s exactly how it turned out. There were so many times, I wished I could rattle off my tongue what was in my heart, but our spirits connected because of our great love we shared with God. And do you know that when we feel so incapable, God makes us capable somehow? Capable to encourage, to bless, to reach out with our hearts instead of with words. Even though we sometimes just laughed, and cried and hugged each other and said the words I love you, it was enough. Enough because God was making it enough.
I will never forget these people of God. They will always be in my prayer. To think they have so little but are so happy, kind and grateful is amazing to me. They live in such danger and daily do without what we take for granted. It is very humbling to think that I am so blessed. I went to give, but they filled my big suitcase I filled with things for them, for me… and the church here. They sold food they made weeks before we came, in order to prepare the best of their meals for us! My heart came back fuller than when I left. I went to give but received more in return. Yes, I do not think you can understand “it is better to give than receive” fully until you’ve done it in a foreign land.
So thankful for this opportunity to visit Honduras. I want to count my blessings over and over and never forget that God has made me fellow citizens with some of the citizens of San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
